The dating world has been changed irreversibly by social media and dating apps. It’s no secret that these algorithms are designed to keep users on their respective platforms, swiping away for that continual dopamine rush. But it seems this “gotta catch ‘em all” attitude toward dating apps has helped affirm a rampant hookup culture in the gay community. Some guys prefer no-strings-attached sex, and that’s fine and dandy. But what about the guys who like to take things slow and start with dinner and movie?
The modern world has brought with it an overwhelming amount of choice with regard to how we tickle our fancy. Whether it’s movies, video games, or men-- there is a virtually endless supply of options. And with this vast selection comes a paralysis of indecisiveness. Why settle when we can explore other options? There’s always that chance that something better is just one swipe away. In Brokeback Mountain, it was just the two of them. That’s love. In our world, I could walk over to West Hollywood and get my dick sucked by a hundred different men in an evening, if it weren’t for the refractory period. At the same time, if I so much as mentioned introducing him to my parents, he’s on the next flight to Cabo. But can I really blame him?
It’s not just the apps to blame for hookup culture though. Obviously there’s historic roots to sneaky trysts with total strangers. And maybe men are just fuckboys? The scientists are still working out all the causes of hookup culture, but until then, us romantics will have to settle with being cock teases in a world of free love. But hey, for some, not putting out on the first date may make you more-sought-after lay. Maybe hookups are good, maybe they’re bad. At the end of the day, it comes down to what your personal preferences are. I just want someone to cook me dinner before they fuck me. Is that too much to ask?
